Item Description

The Sum of All Fears puts you in the boots of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team on the worst day of the decade. Based on the 2002 film adaptation of Tom Clancy's novel, Red Storm Entertainment's shooter opens with the kind of operations HRT trains for, a hostage crisis at a television station in Charleston, West Virginia, and a raid on a heavily armed militia, before a nuclear detonation in Baltimore changes everything and John Clark brings the team over to the CIA to hunt the conspirators behind it.

Red Storm built the game on its Ghost Recon engine and pared the Rainbow Six formula down to its essentials. There is no lengthy planning phase: your three-operative team follows a set insertion route alongside other friendly anti-terror units, you pick from a handful of preset equipment packages, and you can jump between operatives at any moment. Simple orders such as hold here, follow me, or clear and grenade the next room keep the pace brisk across eleven missions that range from rescuing hostages and planting bugs to destroying illegal weapons caches.

That streamlined design makes it the most pick-up-and-play of the early Clancy tactical shooters, and Bill Brown's score gives the operations a suitably cinematic weight. The GameCube release arrived at the end of 2002, during the busiest stretch of the Clancy brand's early-2000s run, and for collectors following the Red Storm lineage or the Clancy films onto the GameCube, it is a distinctive and less familiar piece of that story.
