The Rune of Punishment is a curse dressed up as a power. Every time its bearer uses it, it eats a little more of their life, and when the bearer dies it leaps to someone nearby. In Suikoden IV, that rune finds a young knight trainee from Razril, and the voyage that follows takes the series somewhere it had never been: out onto the open sea.
Set roughly 150 years before the first Suikoden, the story unfolds across the Island Nations as the militaristic Kooluk Empire, armed by the merchant Graham Cray, pushes into the region. Cast out of Razril, the hero is taken in by Lino En Kuldes, the capable young king of Obel, and Obel's secret flagship becomes his headquarters, filling up deck by deck as you recruit the 108 Stars of Destiny. The emotional core is the hero's best friend, Snowe Vingerhut, whose arc from privileged rival to something far more complicated is the character work reviewers singled out for praise.
Sailing defines the experience. You chart a course between islands, run into encounters at sea, and see the series' war battles take to the water. Parties are trimmed to four members, a change from the six of earlier entries, and the score by Masahiko Kimura, Michiru Yamane and Norikazu Miura leans into the salt-air atmosphere of a world made of islands.
Honest context matters: Suikoden IV drew mixed reviews, with criticism for its pacing, its frequent random encounters at sea and its silent lead, and many fans rank it below the rest of the numbered series. But it is the series' only seafaring main entry and the earliest chapter in its timeline, the origin of the Rune of Punishment saga that Suikoden Tactics continues. On a Suikoden shelf, it is the voyage that shows where the whole history begins.
Suikoden IV features the return of the 108 Stars of Destiny, as well as an enhanced interface in a new oceanic environment. You'll follow a young knight while he struggles with Rune, which slowly steals the life of its bearer. The game's strategic battle systems let you attack or cast magic spells with help from other party members. Recruit members of the Stars of Destiny and create a base from the ground up. With a brand-new storyline, characters, and cutscenes, Suikoden IV takes the series to the next level.
