Item Description

Somewhere around the twentieth recruit, Suikoden stops feeling like a typical RPG. Your castle has a blacksmith, a bath, a restaurant and a gaggle of eccentrics wandering its halls, every one of them someone you found, persuaded or outwitted into joining your cause. Inspired by the Chinese classic Water Margin, Konami's series is built on the 108 Stars of Destiny, and gathering them all is an obsession unlike anything else in the genre. Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars brings both PlayStation originals together on PlayStation 5.

The first game casts you as the son of Teo McDohl, a celebrated general of the Scarlet Moon Empire, who is forced to turn against Emperor Barbarossa when his friend Ted entrusts him with the Soul Eater, a True Rune that feeds on the souls of those closest to its bearer. What begins as a young officer's routine duty becomes the story of the Liberation Army, its fallen leader Odessa Silverberg, the strategist Mathiu and the ever-loyal servant Gremio. It is compact, brisk and surprisingly heartbreaking.

Suikoden II is the one players speak about in hushed tones. Its hero and his childhood friend Jowy survive the massacre of their youth brigade by the Highland prince Luca Blight, one of the most terrifying villains a 32-bit RPG ever produced, and are pulled into a war that slowly forces them onto opposite sides. With Nanami at your side, the twin halves of the Rune of Beginning binding the two friends together, and a vastly larger cast and castle to build, it adds cooking contests, richer army battles and a story that lands its emotional blows with real precision. Both games mix six-member party fights with one-on-one duels and large-scale war battles, all scored with Miki Higashino's lyrical, folk-tinged music.

The remaster brings widescreen presentation, enhanced backgrounds, new 3D world maps and character portraits redrawn by series artist Junko Kawano, plus fresh translations written to sit closer to the Japanese scripts. Battle fast-forward, a limited auto-save, diagonal movement, dashing from the start, three difficulty settings and a gallery with a music player smooth the edges, and a cleared Suikoden I save still carries into Suikoden II for special perks, just as Yoshitaka Murayama's original design intended. The Day One Edition is the launch printing of a package that finally makes the duology easy to own and play, after years in which Suikoden II's original PlayStation release was famously hard to track down.
