Item Description

Sudoku asks very little of a game system: a clean grid, a quick way to write numbers, and enough puzzles to last. Sudoku Gridmaster nails all three, and the DS stylus turns out to be a natural pencil. You pick a square, write the number on the touch screen, and keep moving, with none of the cursor-shuffling that makes number puzzles feel clumsy on a controller.

It started life in Japan as part of Hudson Soft's Puzzle Series before Nintendo brought it west in 2006 under its Touch! Generations banner, the same line that carried Brain Age. It was the first full sudoku game on the DS, and it packs 400 puzzles spread across practice, easy, normal and hard settings, with four tutorials for players still learning the logic. Strong solving earns stars, and those stars buy entry to a Rank Test that grades your skill level, which gives a calm puzzle game a quietly addictive goal to chase.

IGN found it a good, straightforward package and expected its puzzle count to last a long time, and that is exactly its appeal. Brain Age offered sudoku as a side dish; Gridmaster is the full meal, built for the kind of five-minute sessions the DS was made for. For a Touch! Generations shelf, it fills in the puzzle corner of that era's pick-up-and-play experiment.
