Item Description

Cartoon cars with big expressive eyes, bouncing over ramps in full polygonal 3D on a Super Nintendo: Stunt Race FX still looks a little impossible. Built by Nintendo EAD with Argonaut Software on the Super FX chip that powered Star Fox, it pointed that same flat-shaded 3D engine at racing at a time when most console racers were still faking depth with sprites and Mode 7 scaling. In Japan it was called Wild Trax, and it was one of the boldest technical experiments Nintendo put on the system.

The structure gives that tech plenty to do. Speed Trax is the main event, a series of races against rival cars on courses that get trickier as you climb the leagues. Stunt Trax swaps competition for obstacle-course runs packed with jumps, ramps and stars to collect against the clock, and Battle Trax splits the screen for head-to-head racing with a friend. Each vehicle handles in its own way, from a nimble coupe to a sturdier 4WD, and learning how each one takes a jump or a hairpin is a big part of the fun.

It is fair to be honest about the frame rate. Pushing this many polygons, the Super FX chip runs at a speed modern players will find choppy, yet the springy, slightly floaty physics make every landing feel earned, and the sense of a whole 3D world rendered on 1994 hardware is exactly the point. The cars' cartoon personalities give the game a charm that the more serious racers of its day lacked.

Stunt Race FX usually sits in the shadow of Star Fox and Super Mario Kart, and it rarely makes lists of the system's great racers. That is what makes it so interesting to own now. It is a window into the Super FX era, when Nintendo and Argonaut were working out what 3D on a home console could be a couple of years before the Nintendo 64 made it ordinary, and on original hardware it runs exactly as that experiment was meant to.
