Item Description

Four players on one Atari 2600 in 1977 was a bold idea, and Street Racer was built to make it happen. Played with the paddle controllers, it puts every driver at the bottom of the screen, steering left and right as traffic and targets rush toward them, with every game racing against a clock of two minutes and sixteen seconds. In one- and two-player games each driver gets a lane; with three or four, players share the road and the bumping gets serious.

There is more on the cartridge than the title suggests. Alongside the straight race are Slalom, Dodgem, Jet Shooter, Number Cruncher and Scoop Ball, spread across 27 variations. Number Cruncher, where you steer to collect numbers, is a sneaky highlight, while Jet Shooter turns the race into a shooting gallery.

Street Racer was one of the nine launch cartridges for the Atari VCS in September 1977 and was sold by Sears as Speedway II. It was programmed by Larry Kaplan, who also wrote Air-Sea Battle for the same launch lineup. Kaplan went on to co-found Activision, where he made Kaboom!, one of the best paddle games the console ever saw, and you can see the start of that touch with the paddle here.

Its blocky graphics belong to the system's very first year, and that is the appeal. This is the 2600 at the starting line, a launch title from the first wave of home cartridges and a rare chance to get four people around one console with paddles in hand.

Street Racer is an action racing game for one to four players played from an overhead view. The screen is split into two lanes; in one or two player games, each player has a lane. In three and four player games, players must share the lanes. Each game has a two minute and sixteen second time limit, and your goal is to earn as many points as possible by the end of this time. In addition to the basic racing version, several other game variations are included as well.
