Item Description

Ryu and Kazuya on the same team. Chun-Li tagging out to Nina in the middle of a combo. Street Fighter X Tekken, Capcom's 2012 take on a crossover fans had dreamed about for years, pulls Tekken's cast into Street Fighter's 2D plane and builds the whole game around two-on-two tag battles. Produced by Yoshinori Ono, who had steered Street Fighter IV's revival, it plays like Capcom's fighting-game team let loose in a toy box.

The tag rules give it a distinctive tension. A round ends the moment either fighter on a team is knocked out, so leaving a wounded partner on screen is a gamble and every tag carries risk. Cross Rush chains launch an opponent and bring your partner in, Cross Art fires off both characters' supers in one cinematic attack, and Cross Assault puts both fighters on screen at once. On top of that, the Gem system lets you equip boosts that activate when conditions are met during a match, and Pandora mode sacrifices a nearly beaten partner for a short, desperate burst of power.

The roster is a celebration of both series. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile and Akuma meet Kazuya, Nina, King, Heihachi, Paul and Law, and the story frames the clash around a mysterious box that crash-lands in the Antarctic. This PlayStation 3 version stands apart for its exclusive guests: inFamous hero Cole MacGrath, Sony's Japanese mascot cats Toro and Kuro, Pac-Man piloting a Mokujin, and Capcom's self-mocking take on the notorious North American box-art Mega Man.

Reviewers praised its depth and presentation, though the tournament crowd never embraced it the way it embraced Street Fighter IV. That makes it a fascinating side road in Capcom's history: big, experimental and packed with ideas no other Street Fighter has tried. As the Capcom fighter where Street Fighter's and Tekken's casts trade blows on equal terms, with a PS3-only guest list on top, it is a crossover with a personality all its own.
