Street Fighter V was built to be played, argued about and watched. Capcom developed it with Dimps as the series' competitive home for a new generation, launching on PS4 and PC in 2016 and built around cross-platform online play between the two, a first for Street Fighter. Through five seasons of updates it became the centerpiece of the fighting game tournament circuit, and the launch release is where that whole run began.

Its big idea is the V-System. Every character has a V-Skill, a unique tool on medium punch and medium kick, from Ryu's Mind's Eye parry to Ken's quick run. Taking damage and landing V-Skills fills the V-Gauge, which powers V-Reversals to escape pressure and a V-Trigger that transforms how a character plays for a few precious seconds. Heavy hits landed as counters become Crush Counters that open the door to big punishes, and Critical Arts give every round a cinematic finisher. The result is a game that rewards reads and bold decisions more than execution alone.

The launch roster of 16 mixes legends and surprises. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, M. Bison, Cammy, Zangief, Dhalsim, Vega and Birdie return, Charlie Nash comes back from the Alpha series for the first time in years, and Karin and R. Mika return from Street Fighter Alpha 3. Four newcomers round it out: the Brazilian grappler Laura, the wind-riding Rashid, the poison-wielding F.A.N.G and Necalli, a savage warrior hungry for the souls of strong fighters. Each one plays differently enough that finding a main is half the fun.

Reception at launch was split, with praise for the fighting and criticism for the thin single-player offerings, and Capcom spent years building on that foundation with new characters, modes and balance changes. The core engine was strong enough to anchor Evo and the Capcom Pro Tour for half a decade, and on PS4 this original release captures the game as it stood on day one: the starting roster and the V-System in its first form.
