Nearly a decade separated Street Fighter IV from the last numbered entry in the series, and you can feel how badly Capcom wanted the comeback to land. Producer Yoshinori Ono and co-developer Dimps went back to the clean, readable rhythm of Street Fighter II, then wrapped it in 3D models and bold, brushstroke ink effects while keeping the fighting on a strict 2D plane. After its arcade debut it reached the PlayStation 3 in 2009 with an expanded cast and a full slate of home modes, and it pulled the whole genre back into the spotlight with it.
The roster reads like a reunion. All twelve World Warriors of Street Fighter II are here, from Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li to Guile, Zangief, Blanka and the four Grand Masters led by M. Bison, joined by Akuma and, on consoles, Cammy, Fei Long, Sakura, Rose, Gen and Dan. The newcomers earned their places quickly: the mixed-martial-arts grappler Abel, the gadget-powered Crimson Viper, the deceptively quick Rufus and the luchador chef El Fuerte. Gouken, the master who trained Ryu and Ken, finally steps into the ring, and the eerie, engineered Seth waits at the end of arcade mode as the head of S.I.N.
Focus Attack is the system that gives Street Fighter IV its own personality. Hold two medium buttons to soak up a hit, charge it for a crumpling counter or dash out of it to extend a combo, and suddenly every exchange carries a layer of bluff and read. Taking damage fills the Revenge Gauge that powers each fighter's cinematic Ultra Combo, so a losing player is always one good guess away from a turnaround, while EX specials and Super Combos give the meter even more uses. The Challenge mode's Trials teach each character's combos step by step, and anime-style prologues and endings in arcade mode give every fighter a moment in the spotlight.
Its influence ran well beyond the living room. Street Fighter IV filled tournament halls again, pulled a new generation of players into the genre and set Capcom on a run of updates through Super, Arcade Edition and Ultra. This original PlayStation 3 release is where that wave began, a snapshot of the moment the series rediscovered its swagger, and the cleanest way to feel the core game before later revisions piled on more fighters and more systems.
Street Fighter IV brings the legendary fighting series back to its roots by taking the beloved fighting moves and techniques of the original Street Fighter II, and infusing them with Capcom’s latest advancements in next generation technology to create a truly extraordinary experience that will re-introduce the world to the time-honored art of virtual martial arts. Newcomers: - Abel - C.Viper - Rufus - El Fuerte - Gouken
