Item Description

Evo 2004. Daigo Umehara's Ken is so low on health that even blocking a single hit would finish him, and Justin Wong's Chun-Li launches a multi-hit super. Daigo parries every blow, then answers with a full combo of his own to win the round. The clip, known as Evo Moment 37, is one of the most replayed moments in competitive gaming, and it could only have happened in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.

That moment explains the whole game. The parry system lets you tap toward an incoming attack, or down for low hits, at the instant it lands, taking no damage and earning the first chance to strike back. It turns every exchange into a read of your opponent's timing and makes even chip damage something a player with nerve can survive. Before each match you also choose one of three Super Arts for your fighter, and EX versions of special moves spend meter for extra power, so a character's game plan can shift dramatically depending on the setup.

Capcom's CPS-III arcade hardware gave 3rd Strike hand-drawn sprite animation that still looks astonishingly fluid, and the cast is gloriously strange. Alex, the grappler who leads the Street Fighter III series, shares the screen with the gentleman boxer Dudley, the stretchy Necro, the ancient hermit Oro, the mysterious Q and the shapeshifting Twelve, while Chun-Li returns and Makoto and Remy debut. Ryu, Ken and Akuma hold up the old guard, Gill waits at the end, and the hip-hop and jazz-tinged soundtrack gives it a late-90s cool no other Street Fighter quite matches.

Capcom brought it to the Dreamcast in 2000, the game's first home release. The learning curve is steep, but few fighters reward practice so directly: every parry you land in training is a parry you can pull off in a real match. More than two decades later, 3rd Strike is still played at tournaments, and on a Dreamcast with an arcade stick you can see exactly why it earned that staying power.
