Item Description

The first thing almost everyone does in Stray is press the button that makes the cat meow, and then press it again just to hear it. That small, silly joy is the key to BlueTwelve Studio's debut, a third-person adventure in which you are not a soldier or a chosen hero but an ordinary orange stray, separated from its family and dropped into a walled-off city where humans are long gone. What they left behind is a neon-lit maze of rooftops, air-conditioning units and cluttered alleyways, populated by robots who have quietly built a culture of their own out of the leftovers of ours.

Moving through that world feels exactly like being a cat. You leap between ledges, squeeze through gaps, balance along pipes and peer down from awnings at the streets below. You can scratch rugs and doors, knock objects off ledges and curl up for a nap on a cushion, and the game treats that mischief as part of the fun rather than a distraction from it. Early on the cat teams up with B-12, a small drone that rides in a harness on its back, translates the robots' language, carries items and lights the way through dark passages. Together they work out what happened to the city through exploration, light environmental puzzles and conversations with residents of districts like the Slums and Midtown.

It is not all cozy. The Zurks, swarming little creatures that devour anything organic, turn several sections into frantic chases, and later stretches add stealth against Sentinel security drones. Those moments land because the cat is so small and so fragile, and the contrast between tension and tenderness gives the story real emotional pull. The robots you meet, with their music, their routines and their quiet longing for the outside world, are more affecting than many fully voiced casts.

Published by Annapurna Interactive in 2022, Stray became one of the breakout games of its year, took home Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards, and reached far beyond the usual gaming audience, helped along by endless videos of real cats watching it on the TV. It is a compact adventure you can finish over a few evenings, and exactly the game to hand to a friend who doesn't normally play anything. On PS5 the rain-slick streets and flickering signage look gorgeous, and few modern games capture a sense of place, and of being very small inside it, quite so well.
