Jack Garland does not want to hear about prophecies, crystals or the fate of the world. He wants to kill Chaos, and he says so constantly. That blunt, almost comic single-mindedness made Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin an internet sensation before it even launched, but behind the memes sits one of the boldest things Square Enix has done with its flagship series: a dark, violent reimagining of the very first Final Fantasy, handed to the action specialists at Team Ninja.
Jack, Ash and Jed arrive in Cornelia carrying darkened crystals and the hope that they are the Warriors of Light the prophecy foretold, and the road to the Chaos Shrine runs through places that will ring a bell for anyone who played the 1987 original, now rebuilt as brutal action stages. The combat comes straight from the Nioh team's playbook: fast, punishing and built around breaking an enemy's guard. Soul Shield lets Jack absorb incoming attacks and steal enemy abilities to use against them, and Soul Burst finishers shatter weakened foes into crystal.
The job system is where the game opens up. More than two dozen jobs, from classic Warrior, Black Mage and Dragoon up through advanced and expert classes, each come with their own skill trees, and Jack carries two at once so he can swap styles mid-fight. A deep loot game lets you tune builds around the job affinity of your gear, and companions such as Neon join Ash and Jed to fight alongside you. The campaign was designed for three-player online co-op, with AI allies filling the party when you play alone.
It is odd, loud and completely sincere, and its ending reframes the original Final Fantasy in a way longtime fans are still debating. For a Final Fantasy shelf, Stranger of Paradise is the series' most aggressive spin-off and an unexpected love letter to where it all began.
