What happens when the hero gives up? Steins;Gate 0 is built on that devastating question. It branches from the darkest moment of the original Steins;Gate, the timeline in which Rintaro Okabe fails to save Kurisu Makise and abandons time travel for good. Six months later he has turned his back on the experiments that started it all, buried his mad-scientist alter ego Hououin Kyouma and is trying to live as an ordinary university student, until a seminar puts him face to face with something he cannot ignore.

That something is Amadeus, an artificial intelligence that recreates a person from a snapshot of their memories, and one of its subjects was Kurisu. Through Maho Hiyajo, Kurisu's former colleague and a sharp, prickly new lead, Okabe is pulled back into a web of conspiracies and rival powers, along with a mysterious girl named Kagari, while old friends like Mayuri, Daru and Suzuha carry the weight of a future that is falling apart. As in the original, choices arrive through Okabe's phone: whether he answers a call from Amadeus, how he replies on the RINE messenger. Those decisions split the story into multiple routes and endings that build toward a true ending tying the whole saga together.

The tone is heavier than its predecessor, steeped in grief, trauma and the cost of chasing the past, yet the humor of the Future Gadget Lab still breaks through, especially whenever Daru opens his mouth. huke's distinctive character art and the returning Japanese voice cast give it seamless continuity with the first game, and the story was strong enough to inspire its own anime adaptation in 2018.

This is the Japanese release, which reached PlayStation Vita in December 2015, nearly a year ahead of the English version, with its original Japanese script and voice acting. For import collectors and readers of Japanese, it is Steins;Gate 0 in its first form. And because the story leans heavily on the twists of the original, it works best as the companion piece that makes the first game's ending hit even harder.
