Item Description
Paris, 1789, and the Revolution is being crushed not by soldiers but by machines. Steelrising imagines a history in which Louis XVI answered the uprising with an army of clockwork automatons, turning the streets of the capital into a battlefield of brass, steam and blood. You play Aegis, a mysterious automaton built to protect Queen Marie Antoinette, sent out alone to confront the king's mechanical army and set history back on course.
Developed by Spiders, the French studio behind GreedFall, and published by Nacon in 2022, it is a Soulslike action RPG with a few welcome twists. Aegis moves with an elegance that matches her porcelain-and-gilt design, dashing, leaping and pulling herself up to rooftops and ledges with a grappling hook, which gives this Paris far more verticality than most games in the genre. Her arsenal mixes heavy and light melee weapons with ranged options, and alchemical fire, frost and lightning let you freeze, burn or shock the king's machines before moving in for the kill.
Combat rewards aggression and timing in equal measure, and towering automaton bosses test both. Where Steelrising breaks from the usual formula is its Assist Mode, which lets players dial down the difficulty and soften the penalties for dying, so anyone who came for the alternate history and the setting can see the story through without grinding against a wall. Purists can leave it switched off and get the full punishing experience.
The setting is the real draw. Few games have touched the French Revolution, and none quite like this: ruined gardens, grand boulevards and palaces patrolled by clanking, eerily graceful machines, with an alternate history to uncover as Aegis learns what she was made for. For players who have worked through the big names of the Soulslike genre and want something with a different flavor, this one makes a strong case for itself.
