Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. The box includes its insert tray. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

Starship Hector asks you to fight on two fronts at once. Your ship carries one weapon for the enemies swarming the sky and a separate, independently fired weapon for targets on the ground, an idea Namco's Xevious made famous, and keeping both working together is the core skill the game demands. Ignore the gun turrets below while dodging fighters above and your shield bar drains fast; the only way to top it back up is by destroying certain enemies, so aggression is rewarded as much as caution.

What makes Hector stand out among NES shooters is the way it refuses to sit still. Its stages alternate between vertical, top-down sections and horizontal, side-scrolling ones, so just as you settle into one rhythm the game shifts perspective and forces you to read the screen in a new way. It is a demanding shooter, built for players who enjoy learning enemy patterns and squeezing out a little further on every attempt.

Hudson Soft first released the game in Japan in 1987 as Hector '87, and brought it to North America in 1990 under the Starship Hector name. In 1995 it was gathered with Star Force and Star Soldier, two more Hudson-published shooters, in Japan's Caravan Shooting Collection for the Super Famicom.

Starship Hector rewards the players who go looking for it: a Hudson shooter with two triggers to master, a camera that keeps changing the shape of the battlefield, and a challenge that keeps pulling you back for one more run. It is the American release of a game Japan knew as Hector '87, and a fine companion to Star Soldier on any NES shooter shelf.

About the game

Your ship is equipped with both a standard laser and an independently fired ground weapon, which you must coordinate to defeat ground and aerial enemies. A shield bar keeps track of your damage and you can replenish it by defeating certain enemies, but otherwise its just you, your ship and several stages of alien enemies that alternate between top-down and side-scrolling perspectives.
