Item Description

Few Star Wars games open as boldly as The Force Unleashed. The prologue hands you Darth Vader himself, cutting through Wookiee defenders on Kashyyyk, before revealing the child who will become his secret apprentice. Years later that boy, codenamed Starkiller, is hunting the last surviving Jedi for his master in the shadowy years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and the story he stumbles into ends up shaping the galaxy of the original films.

The real star is the Force. On the Xbox 360 the game runs on a combination of Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter, which makes wood splinter, glass shatter and metal buckle realistically, and NaturalMotion's Euphoria, which has stormtroopers grabbing at railings and each other as they are flung through the air. Chain a Force Grip into a throw, a burst of Lightning, then a Force Push down a crowded corridor, and the results are different every time. The defining moment comes on Raxus Prime, where Starkiller drags a Star Destroyer out of the sky with his mind.

The tour of the galaxy is a strong one: a TIE fighter factory in orbit, the junkyard world of Raxus Prime and its deranged Jedi Kazdan Paratus, the glowing jungles of Felucia where Shaak Ti waits, Cloud City on Bespin and finally the Death Star. Starkiller travels with the pilot Juno Eclipse and PROXY, a holographic training droid with a habit of trying to kill him, and the disillusioned General Rahm Kota pulls him toward a very different destiny. Sam Witwer's performance as Starkiller grounds it all, and the two endings go in sharply different directions.

The Force Unleashed was the centerpiece of a LucasArts multimedia project spanning novels, comics and toys, and it became the fastest-selling Star Wars game up to that point. It is also the version worth owning: the PlayStation 2, Wii and handheld editions were separate productions without the Digital Molecular Matter and Euphoria physics, so on the Xbox 360 Starkiller's powers look and feel the way LucasArts designed them.
