Item Description

Few Star Wars games have a moment as audacious as the one on Raxus Prime, where Darth Vader's secret apprentice plants his feet on a junkyard world and drags a Star Destroyer out of the sky with nothing but the Force. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was built around that fantasy. LucasArts set out to make the Force feel as overwhelming as the films always suggested, then handed it to a character with no reason to hold back.

That character is Starkiller, an apprentice raised in secret by Vader to hunt the last surviving Jedi in the years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Played in voice and likeness by Sam Witwer, he is joined by the pilot Juno Eclipse, the holographic training droid PROXY and the disillusioned Jedi General Rahm Kota as his loyalties begin to crack. The story grows into an origin tale for the Rebel Alliance itself, and a late decision splits the ending between the light side and the dark. It was the centerpiece of a larger Force Unleashed multimedia project, and its story now lives in the Star Wars Legends line.

Combat is a physics playground. Force Push scatters stormtroopers like bowling pins, Force Grip lets you lift an enemy and hurl him into his squadmates, and Force Lightning arcs through crowds, all chained together with lightsaber combos. The game runs on Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter, which makes wood splinter, metal buckle and glass shatter convincingly, and NaturalMotion's Euphoria, which has enemies flail and grab at anything nearby as you throw them around. The tour takes you through an Imperial TIE fighter factory, the junk planet Raxus Prime, the alien jungles of Felucia, the Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk, Cloud City and the Death Star.

It was a major hit for LucasArts and led to a sequel, and Starkiller still comes up whenever fans talk about the Star Wars games that made them feel most powerful. Critics had quibbles with its targeting and some boss fights, but nobody forgets the first time a whole squad of troopers went cartwheeling off a catwalk at the flick of a wrist. This PS3 release is LucasArts' own high-definition version, built around those physics systems, and the place to see Vader's apprentice at full strength.
