Item Description

The Battle of Hoth fills only a few minutes of the film, but Parker Brothers turned it into a fight you can stretch out for as long as your nerves hold. You fly a lone snowspeeder over the frozen plains while a column of Imperial AT-AT walkers lumbers toward the Rebel base, and it is up to you to stop them one at a time before they get there.

Bringing down a walker is a war of attrition. On the Atari 2600 it takes 48 hits to the head or body, and shots to the legs do nothing at all, so you learn to weave in close, strafe the torso and peel away before its return fire finds you. The walkers shift color as the damage adds up, from black through gray, red and orange to a critical yellow, which gives every pass a satisfying sense of progress. Watch for a small flashing spot on a walker, because a hit there drops it in one shot. Some stages launch a homing smart bomb from a flashing port that chases your speeder across the screen, and when your own craft starts changing color you can set it down to make repairs. Survive two minutes and the Force is with you, granting a short stretch of invulnerability that is perfect for an all-out attack run.

This was the first licensed Star Wars video game, programmed by Rex Bradford, and it became one of Parker Brothers' two best-selling games of 1982 alongside Frogger. An Intellivision version followed in 1983. In true Empire fashion the walkers always win in the end; the real contest is how many you topple and how high a score you can post before the line reaches the base.

For Star Wars collectors, this is where four decades of licensed games began. For Atari 2600 players, it is a tense, easy-to-read shooter that still captures the feeling of a snowspeeder pilot staring up at an AT-AT and refusing to back down.
