Item Description

While Queen Amidala's story played out on the big screen, Star Wars: Starfighter went looking for the pilots at the edges of it. The Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo is beginning, and three very different flyers are about to collide: Rhys Dallows, a young pilot in the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps flying the gleaming N-1 starfighter; Vana Sage, a sharp-tongued mercenary working for the wrong side; and Nym, a Feeorin pirate with his own reasons to get in the fight. Their stories braid together across a campaign that leads straight into the Battle of Naboo.

LucasArts built it as an arcade-style flier rather than a dense simulator, and that is the source of its charm. Missions move between atmospheric runs low over planet surfaces and dogfights in open space, with escort jobs, strafing attacks and swarming Trade Federation droid fighters. The campaign takes you to the volcanic world of Eos and its droid factory, into orbit above Lok and finally to the Federation's Droid Control Ship, and every mission carries bonus and hidden objectives that unlock extra missions, videos and new ships for pilots who chase them down.

The Xbox Special Edition, ported by Secret Level early in the console's life, is the expanded take on the 2001 PlayStation 2 original. It sharpened the graphics, beefed up the multiplayer and added new missions on top of the main campaign, and critics generally rated it a solid, good-looking upgrade. The prequel-era ship designs, all chrome curves and bright Naboo yellow, look especially striking with the extra polish.

It also set the stage for LucasArts' follow-up, Jedi Starfighter, which brought Nym back for another round. For anyone who loves the Phantom Menace era's look, Starfighter is a fast, approachable way to fly through it, and the Special Edition is the fullest version of it to land on a console disc.
