Item Description

A long time ago, the whole first Star Wars film fit on a Game Boy cartridge, and this version brings it back. Originally released in North America in 1992, this Game Boy adaptation of A New Hope was ported by NMS Software from the NES game and published by Capcom, packing Luke Skywalker's journey from Tatooine farm boy to Death Star hero into a mix of side-scrolling platforming and vehicle sequences.

The structure is more open than most licensed games of the era. Luke roams the Tatooine desert in his landspeeder, searching caves and the Jawas' Sandcrawler, tracking down Obi-Wan Kenobi and heading into Mos Eisley to find Han Solo. From there the Millennium Falcon takes to space for a run through an asteroid field before the climb through the Death Star's corridors to the detention block where Leia is held, with Han and Leia joining as playable characters along the way. It all builds to the trench run, the X-wing assault that closes out the film and the game alike.

In 2019 Limited Run Games brought it back as a playable cartridge for original hardware in collector-focused editions, and this Premium Edition is one of those modern releases. That gives it an interesting double life: a piece of early-'90s handheld Star Wars history and a modern collector's edition of it, made for fans who want the game on the shelf and in the Game Boy.
