Cal Kestis has grown up, and the galaxy has only gotten darker. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor picks up five years after Fallen Order, and the hopeful Padawan of the first game is now a hardened Jedi Knight fighting a losing war against the Empire, his old crew scattered and his choices weighing heavier than ever. Respawn Entertainment, working with Lucasfilm Games, built a sequel that is bigger in every direction without losing the heart that made the first game work.

Combat is the most dramatic upgrade. Cal now has five lightsaber stances: the classic single blade, the double-bladed staff, dual wielding, a crossguard stance with heavy, punishing swings, and an unconventional blaster stance that pairs his saber with a pistol. You can equip two at a time and switch between them on the fly, which turns fights into a playground for your own style. Force powers, finishers and a deeper skill tree build on Fallen Order's parry-focused foundation, and the boss encounters are bigger and more theatrical than before.

The worlds are larger, too. Much of the adventure centers on Koboh, a sprawling frontier planet with a frontier town that grows as you recruit new residents to Pyloon's Saloon, the cantina Greez now runs. There are mounts to ride, new grappling and traversal tools, hidden chambers full of puzzles and optional bosses lurking off the beaten path. Familiar faces like Merrin and Cere return, BD-1 is as delightful as ever, and newcomer Bode Akuna becomes a key ally as the story uncovers the secrets of the High Republic era, the lost planet of Tanalorr and the ancient Jedi Dagan Gera.

On PlayStation 5, the lighting, scale and detail of Koboh show off the hardware beautifully. Survivor is the middle chapter of Respawn's planned trilogy and a big step up from an already excellent original, the kind of sequel that rewards everyone who followed Cal through Fallen Order and sets the stage for what comes next.
