Every Star Wars battle is full of soldiers who never get a close-up: the rebels dug into the trenches on Hoth, the stormtroopers crashing through the forests of Endor, the clone troopers pouring onto Geonosis. Star Wars: Battlefront hands you a blaster and drops you into their ranks. Pandemic Studios' 2004 shooter skips the chosen-one story and lets you fight the war from the ground, as one trooper among dozens, with AT-ATs lumbering overhead and blaster fire coming from every direction.

The structure is easy to love. Each side brings a set of classes, from the standard soldier and the rocket-carrying heavy to pilots, scouts and snipers, plus a specialist unique to each army: Wookiee warriors for the Rebels, jet-pack dark troopers for the Empire, jet troopers for the Republic and rolling, shielded droidekas for the Separatists. Matches are a tug of war over command posts, where capturing a post gives your side a new place to spawn and every fallen soldier drains your reinforcement count. Hop into a snowspeeder to trip up an AT-AT on Hoth or tear through Endor's trees on a speeder bike, and the movie scenes you grew up on start playing out under your own control.

Battles span both eras of the saga, the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, through historical campaigns built around the films and Galactic Conquest, a planet-by-planet strategy mode where every world you take adds an advantage for the fights ahead. On Xbox it was also built for split-screen play, so two players can share the couch and fight side by side through the campaign. Online battles over the original Xbox Live were a big part of its launch, though that service has long since been switched off.

Battlefront arrived the same autumn the original trilogy first came to DVD, and it launched a series that has carried the name through several console generations since. This first entry has an appeal the later games never quite reproduced: big, scrappy battles, a rock-solid class system and a soundtrack of John Williams themes underneath it all. The Platinum Hits reissue is a sign of how many Xbox owners picked it up the first time around.
