Darth Maul, Rey and Yoda were never supposed to share a battlefield, and Star Wars Battlefront II puts them on the same one anyway. DICE's 2017 shooter spans all three eras of the saga at once, so a single evening can move from the Clone Wars to the Battle of Endor to the shadow of the First Order, with heroes and villains from every trilogy fighting side by side.

Unlike its 2015 predecessor, Battlefront II has a full single-player campaign, developed by EA Motive. It follows Iden Versio, commander of the elite Imperial unit Inferno Squad, starting at the destruction of the second Death Star and carrying through the Empire's desperate aftermath toward the era of The Force Awakens. Along the way, chapters hand you control of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa, and the story offers a rare look at the Galactic Civil War from the Imperial side.

Multiplayer was built around huge set-piece battles. Galactic Assault plays out objective-driven fights on maps drawn from the films, Starfighter Assault puts you in X-wings, TIE fighters and hero ships among capital ships and asteroid fields, and Heroes vs. Villains is pure lightsaber-and-blaster chaos. Soldiers come in Assault, Heavy, Officer and Specialist classes, and good play earns Battle Points to spend on vehicles, elite troopers or a turn as a hero. Arcade mode offers offline battles against AI, and the Frostbite visuals and Lucasfilm sound make every moment look and sound like the movies.

Its history is one of gaming's great turnarounds. Battlefront II launched amid a loot box backlash so loud that it made headlines far outside gaming, and EA pulled paid microtransactions and rebuilt the progression system. DICE then spent years adding free content, including Clone Wars-era heroes and new large-scale modes, until the game became the most complete Star Wars sandbox the series has produced. On PS4 it is the place to fight across every era of the saga in one package.
