Item Description

The first thing most people noticed was how real it looked. For Star Wars Battlefront, DICE photographed original props from the Lucasfilm archives and visited real-world filming locations, then rebuilt Hoth, Endor, Tatooine and Sullust in the Frostbite engine. The snow, the redwoods and the dunes look uncannily like the movies, and with John Williams' music and the classic sound effects on top, it is as close as a shooter has come to stepping inside the original trilogy.

This 2015 reboot of the Battlefront series is focused squarely on that trilogy. You fight as Rebel or Imperial troops in objective-based modes, from Walker Assault, where the Rebels scramble to bring down advancing AT-ATs, to Fighter Squadron, a dogfighting mode filled with X-wings, TIE fighters and A-wings. Hero pickups let you take control of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia, Darth Vader, the Emperor or Boba Fett mid-battle, and in the skies the Millennium Falcon and Slave I can swoop in as hero ships.

There is no traditional story campaign, and the game was built mainly around large online battles, but it was never multiplayer-only. Its Missions mode includes training scenarios, battles against AI and Survival waves on Tatooine, Hoth and other planets, and on console those missions support split-screen co-op, a rare treat for a modern shooter. The free Battle of Jakku update tied the game to the release of The Force Awakens, putting players on that desert world's battlefield of fallen Star Destroyers in the weeks before the film opened.

Two years later, Battlefront II would spread the action across every era of the saga, which is exactly why this first entry still has its devoted players: it puts the original trilogy front and center, with no prequel-era battles at all. The Deluxe Edition was the launch-window premium release of the game, and on PS4 it is the version to play if Hoth, Endor and the Rebellion's fight against the Empire are what Star Wars means to you.
