Snowspeeders sweep low over Hoth as an AT-AT lumbers toward the Rebel shield generator, blaster bolts crackling across the snow with exactly the sound you remember from the films. EA DICE's 2015 reboot of Star Wars Battlefront is built for that feeling of stepping into the original trilogy's great battles, and few games have ever looked or sounded more like Star Wars.
DICE used photogrammetry and its Frostbite engine to recreate Hoth, Endor, Tatooine and the volcanic world of Sullust in striking detail, and the audio draws on the films' own library of blasters, engines and screaming TIE fighters. On the ground you fight as a Rebel or Imperial soldier in first or third person, climb into X-wings, TIE fighters, AT-STs and speeder bikes, and grab power-up tokens that turn you into a hero or villain. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine and Boba Fett headline the base game, each with their own abilities.
The game was designed above all around large online battles, from the 40-player Walker Assault on Hoth to the dogfights of Fighter Squadron and the lightsaber-and-blaster showdowns of Heroes vs. Villains, with Star Cards letting you build a loadout of gadgets and abilities. Away from that side of the game, the Missions menu offers training scenarios, battles and wave-based survival that can be played solo or cooperatively offline, including split-screen co-op on PS4, a rare treat in a modern shooter.
Critics loved the presentation and wished for more depth, and that tension is the honest picture: this is a game about atmosphere first. Played today, it is the most lavish recreation of the original trilogy's look and sound of its generation, and a terrific couch co-op pick for a Star Wars night.
