Item Description

Kirk and Spock, side by side, phasers drawn: that is the whole pitch, and Star Trek commits to it from start to finish. Developed by Digital Extremes and published by Namco Bandai, it tells an original story in the J.J. Abrams film universe, set after the 2009 Star Trek reboot and before Star Trek Into Darkness, and it brought the film cast into the voice booth, with Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock alongside Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and John Cho as the rest of the Enterprise crew.

The Gorn take center stage. Bursting through a rip in space, the reptilian raiders steal the Helios device, technology meant to speed up the terraforming of New Vulcan, and abduct the Vulcan Surok, sending Kirk and Spock through the rift after them. It plays as a third-person cover shooter built around two-player co-op. Kirk is the straightforward gunfighter with his phaser, while Spock leans toward stealth, with the Vulcan nerve pinch, a mind meld and a freezing weapon at his disposal. Tricorders scan the environment and drive the puzzles, and the campaign mixes in turret battles aboard the Enterprise, space dives and platforming sections.

Critics were hard on it at release, pointing to bugs, camera trouble and repetitive combat, and it is honest to say this is a game people come to for the license and the company rather than polish. That backstory is part of its fascination now: it was Paramount's first in-house video game, a big-budget tie-in from the final years of the movie-game era, with a score by Chad Seiter that draws on Michael Giacchino's film themes.

For a Star Trek collector, it is a piece of the Kelvin timeline found nowhere else, an Enterprise adventure voiced by the stars of the films, and best enjoyed the way it was designed, with a friend on the other half of the bridge crew.
