Item Description

When the Atari Video Computer System went on sale in 1977, Star Ship was one of the nine cartridges on the shelf beside it. It was the first VCS game by Bob Whitehead, who was inspired by the 3D perspective of Atari's arcade game Starship 1 and set out to capture that sense of flying into the screen on the new home console. For a machine that was brand new to living rooms, a first-person view of stars streaking past was a bold thing to attempt.

The cartridge is really several games in one. The main Star Ship mode gives you about two minutes to blast enemy starfighters, worth one point, and space robots, worth three, while collisions with enemies or asteroids cost you. In the two-player game one pilot hunts the other, who can turn invisible near the crosshairs, with the roles swapping when the timer runs out. Warp Drive sends you racing as far as possible through an asteroid field with an optional speed boost, and Lunar Lander challenges you to set down on a moon that the computer, or a second player, steers to dodge you.

Reviewers found it tricky to master, and Whitehead himself later called it "clunky," though its sound effects drew praise. Sears sold it as Outer Space under its Tele-Games label, and Atari had stopped releasing it by around 1980. What makes it worth owning now is its place at the very beginning: this is a launch-day 2600 game and the debut of a designer who went on to co-found Activision and create hits such as Stampede, a piece of the console's first lineup that shows how quickly its programmers began reaching beyond the obvious.
