Item Description

Star Raiders was the game that convinced a generation of Atari computer owners they were sitting in a starship cockpit. Doug Neubauer's original for the Atari 400 and 800 became one of the defining computer games of its era, and in September 1982 Atari brought it to the 2600 in one of the most ambitious conversions the console ever attempted.

The mission is to clear the galaxy of Zylon forces. You consult a galactic chart to find sectors under attack, hyperwarp across space to reach them and engage Zylon fighters in first-person combat through your cockpit view, with starbases where you can dock for repairs and resupply. It is a space combat simulator in the truest sense, asking you to think strategically about where to fight next while managing your ship's systems in the heat of battle. To make all of that work on a console with one joystick button, Atari built the 2600 version around its Video Touch Pad, a keypad controller that handles the ship's functions while the joystick flies, which is also why the game carried a higher price than most 2600 cartridges at launch.

The 2600 conversion has a smaller galactic chart than the computer original, and critics at the time measured it harshly against that version, though Jeff Gerstmann later judged it "pretty good on its own." Players clearly agreed: it was the sixth-best-selling console release by October 1982 and stayed in the top ten the following month. Today it is a fascinating artifact of the moment when Atari tried to squeeze a computer-class space simulator onto its home console, and the clearest demonstration of just how far Atari was willing to push the 2600 at the height of its popularity.
