How do you remake a game that so many players remember through the soft glow of a CRT? Gemdrops' answer for Star Ocean: The Second Story R is to keep the pixel art and rebuild the world around it. The 2D character sprites that defined tri-Ace's 1998 PlayStation classic now walk through richly detailed 3D environments, a 2.5D look that feels both nostalgic and new.

The story is still one of the genre's great cult favorites. Claude C. Kenny, a young Earth Federation officer and son of a famous admiral, is accidentally transported to the underdeveloped planet Expel, where a villager named Rena Lanford mistakes him for a legendary hero because of the strange "sword of light" he carries. The mysterious meteorite known as the Sorcery Globe, the sinister Ten Wise Men, and a quest that grows from a village errand into something cosmic all follow. You choose to play as either Claude or Rena, changing your view of events and which companions you can recruit.

Battles keep the fast, real-time action the series is known for, now with a Break system: sustained pressure staggers enemies and lets you call in Assault Actions from allies for powerful extra strikes. The original's legendary depth is intact, with Private Actions that build relationships between characters and steer you toward dozens of possible endings, and an expanded Item Creation system where Specialties such as Cooking, Art and Metalcraft let you craft gear and items that can break the game wide open. Motoi Sakuraba's soundtrack is available in its original form or in new arrangements by Sakuraba himself, and full voice acting is offered in both English and Japanese.

Few remakes manage to respect the original this carefully while removing so much friction. For anyone who played The Second Story on the PlayStation or its later PSP version, Second Evolution, this is the definitive way to revisit Expel, and for newcomers it is the perfect entry point into the Star Ocean saga's most celebrated chapter.
