Item Description
Star Ocean began as one of the most ambitious games on the Super Famicom in 1996, a science-fiction RPG squeezed onto a cartridge in Japan that never made it overseas. Star Ocean: First Departure is the PSP remake that finally brought that story to Western players, and it was rebuilt to stand alongside the series' later entries rather than just preserved.
The adventure begins on the planet Roak, where Roddick Farrence, a young swordsman from the village of Kratus, watches a petrifying plague sweep across his home. The arrival of Ronyx J. Kenny and Ilia Silvestri, officers of the Earth Federation, turns a medieval fantasy into a sci-fi journey that sends Roddick and his friends three centuries into the past in search of a cure. Roddick's childhood friends Millie and Dorne set out with him, and the mix of swords, sorcery and starships is exactly the blend the series is known for.
Battles play out in real time, with you controlling one character while your allies fight alongside you, and building a party is half the fun: not every recruit can join the same playthrough, so your choices shape the team you end up with. Private Actions, small optional character scenes triggered in towns, let relationships develop and nudge the story's outcome, while the deep skill and item creation systems reward experimentation. Tose rebuilt the game on the engine of Star Ocean: The Second Story, adding new voice acting, anime cutscenes by Production I.G and new recruitable characters, and Motoi Sakuraba's music gives the whole quest a grand sweep.
First Departure is the starting point of the entire Star Ocean saga, and on the PSP it pairs naturally with Second Evolution, the remake of the series' second game. If you have only ever met the series through its later entries, this is the chance to see where Star Ocean's mix of space opera and classic Japanese RPG began.
