Instead of an Arwing, Star Fox Guard hands you a wall of security monitors. Slippy Toad's uncle Grippy runs a mining operation spread across the Lylat system, and robots keep raiding his bases, so it is your job to watch a grid of camera feeds on the TV, spot the intruders and blast them before they reach the core. The GamePad shows an overhead map of the facility; tap a camera to take control of it, aim and fire its laser. It is simple to learn and frantic to master.
The tension comes from the two kinds of robots. Combat bots march toward the core and end the mission if they reach it, while Chaos bots exist only to cause trouble, scrambling feeds and knocking out your view so the real threat can slip past. Juggling both turns every mission into an exercise in split attention, and the best moments come when you catch an intruder on a monitor you had stopped watching just in time to zap it.
The game grew out of Shigeru Miyamoto's Project Guard demo, shown at E3 2014, and PlatinumGames co-developed the finished release with Nintendo. It was also built with Squad Ops, an online mode for designing robot squads and sending them against other players' bases, though Nintendo's Wii U online services have since ended.
Star Fox Guard first launched as a companion disc to the first print of Star Fox Zero, which makes it one of the more unusual first-party releases on the Wii U: a tower-defense game that uses the GamePad as a security console in a way no other system could copy. It is a clever, compact strategy game and a curious side branch of Star Fox history worth having next to Zero.
