Item Description

Saddle up and swing your rope: Stampede puts you on horseback behind a herd of runaway cattle, and your job is to lasso every one before it slips past you. It comes from Bob Whitehead, one of the four Atari programmers who left to found Activision, and it has that early Activision signature of an instantly readable idea polished until it is hard to put down.

The cattle run across the range in the same direction as you, only slower, so you gallop up behind each one and time your throw to rope it. The catch is the Black Angus, the stubborn calf that refuses to move at all; because it stands still, it is the easiest to overlook and the most dangerous to ignore. You can let two head of cattle get past, but a third ends the game, and every 1,000 points earns an extra free pass. Juggling which steer to chase and which to sacrifice is the heart of the game, and the pace builds steadily as the herd thickens. Somewhere around 5,000 points the pattern cycles back to the start, which has made it a favorite for score chasers who want to see how many loops they can survive.

Video magazine praised it in 1982 as a "thrilling representation of rope ridin'" with "charming visuals," and The Space Gamer named it one of the best strategy and action games for the Atari system. Activision later brought it to the Intellivision, but the 2600 cartridge is the original, and its bright cowboy graphics and simple joystick-and-button play mean a newcomer can pick it up in seconds and still be chasing a better score an hour later.

About the game

The objective of Stampede is to round up all of the cattle you encounter. To do so, the player must lasso each one in order to capture it. The player is initially only allowed to let two cattle pass; if a third one slips by, the game is over. An important caveat to this is that the player gets one extra free pass for every 1,000 points scored. So, if a player were at 2,000 points and had not yet let any cattle pass, then he or she would be allowed to let four cattle pass before the fifth one ended the game (assuming he or she did not reach 3,000). This makes it possible for an expert player to repeatedly beat the game - as after about 5,000 points or so the game essentially "resets," and the same pattern is repeated.
