Game only: the cartridge in a protective holder, no box or manual. The photos are of this exact cartridge — look them over closely for its condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.
Few Atari 2600 games put you in a tighter spot than Squeeze Box. You play a pistol-packing jailbird trapped in a cell whose walls of colored blocks close in from both sides, and the only way out is to shoot your own escape route through them before they crush you. The longer you take, the faster the walls come, and the next room is always worse than the last.
The game is a clever inversion of the usual shooter: instead of the targets coming to you, the walls themselves are the threat, and every block you blast away earns points while opening a path. Three touches of the wall and it's all over, so each room becomes a balancing act between greed and survival. Stay to rack up a few more blocks, or bolt for the exit before the gap closes? Six game variations adjust the challenge, and the prisoner himself is drawn noticeably larger than most 2600 characters, which gives the action a chunky, cartoonish look.
Squeeze Box was developed by James Wickstead Design Associates for U.S. Games, one of the more unusual chapters in 2600 history. U.S. Games was owned by Quaker Oats, the cereal company, which bought it in 1982 at the height of the cartridge boom, while rival food giant General Mills was already in the game through Parker Brothers, and then wrote the division off within a year as the market collapsed. Reviewers have called it punishing, and it is a demanding game that doesn't hand out much mercy, but its premise is memorable and nothing else in the library feels quite like it. For anyone collecting the stranger corners of the third-party 2600 boom, it is an intriguing cartridge with a great story behind it.
Squeeze Box is a single player, full color game designed to be played on the Atari Video Computer System or the Sears Video Arcade. There are six game variations to test your skill and judgment. Squeeze Box is the ultimate escape game. Our pistol packin' jailbird has got to shoot like crazy to knock out an escape route through the walls... before they close in on him. The longer it takes, the faster they come, so aim carefully. But don't rush out too fast because the next room is worse, and you're getting points for each block you shoot out. Test your endurance! Wait too long and you might touch the wall. Three touches and its all over - except for the hottest finish you have ever encountered in a video game.
