Item Description

Every Spyro villain needs a ridiculous origin, and Grendor's is one of the best: a Rhynoc who browsed Bianca's library, read her spellbook upside down in hopes of becoming a powerful magician, and ended up with two heads. His plan to fix himself involves the fairies' wings, which is why the fairy realms are suddenly full of friends frozen solid in ice prisons, and why Zoe sends out a call for the purple dragon.

Season of Ice was Spyro's first Game Boy Advance adventure and the first Spyro game made by a studio other than Insomniac Games. Digital Eclipse rebuilt the PlayStation formula around an isometric overhead view while keeping the moves that matter: Spyro still breathes fire, charges and glides, and still treats every gem in sight as a personal challenge. Four seasonal fairy realms, beginning with the Autumn Fairy Home, serve as hubs, and each level portal needs a certain number of rescued fairies to open, so progress comes from exploring thoroughly and helping the characters who will trade a fairy for a favor.

The variety keeps it moving. Flying levels send Spyro racing through hoops and blasting enemies against the clock, using the GBA's Mode 7 scaling to fake a sweeping 3D horizon, while Sparx gets levels of his own where the dragonfly destroys bug nests, hunts for keys and grabs weapons. Hunter and Bianca turn up along the way, Moneybags is waiting to charge his usual fee, and Spyro faces Grendor twice before the last frozen fairy, Zoe herself, is finally set free. Collecting every gem and fairy unlocks a bonus game, Dragonfly X, a fitting reward for completionists.

It found a big audience, selling around a million copies in the US, and it opened Spyro's Game Boy Advance era, which continued with Season of Flame and Attack of the Rhynocs. If you grew up on the original PlayStation trilogy, it is a fascinating look at how the series translated to a handheld, keeping the humor and collect-everything appeal while seeing the world from a completely different angle. It is also the game that proved the purple dragon could thrive away from Insomniac.

About the game

Spyro: Season of Ice is the first Spyro game not developed by Insomniac Games and to appear on the Game Boy Advance. Unlike the Playstation series, Seasons of Ice has the player controlling Spyro through an isometric overhead camera. However, all of Spyro's skills are still available to use, including his flame breath and glide. And the flying bonus levels make use of the Mode 7 technology in order to create the 3D like perspective.
