Item Description

Spy Hunter has always come down to two things: the Peter Gunn Theme and blowing up everything on the highway. TT Fusion's 2012 reboot for PlayStation Vita keeps both front and center. The theme and its variations drive the soundtrack, and you are once again behind the wheel of the Interceptor, a government prototype that is part supercar and part rolling armory, hunting enemy agents at full speed just as players did at the 1983 arcade cabinet.

You carry up to four weapons at once, mapped to the Vita's face buttons and drawn from an arsenal of machine guns, missiles, mines, flamethrowers, shockers and shotguns, and weapons trucks along the route let you reconfigure your loadout between stretches of mayhem. A UAV drone calls in airstrikes, mortars and the Sky Needle orbital laser to flatten fortified targets. Missions are short, explosive bursts across highways, power plants, a cargo plane, an aircraft carrier and a freight train, with outrageous set pieces such as a runaway semi that keeps coming after you even after it sails off a cliff.

Critics were tough on its presentation, and this is a lean, arcade-minded take on the series rather than a sprawling spy epic. Its strengths are the ones that made Spy Hunter famous in the first place: a satisfying arsenal, nonstop vehicular combat and a theme tune you cannot get out of your head, plus multiplayer battles alongside the campaign. It is a pick-up-and-play blast of a handheld game and an oddball piece of a franchise that has been chasing villains down the highway since the arcade era.
