Item Description

That driving, slinky bassline is the first thing anyone remembers about Spy Hunter. Bally Midway's 1983 arcade hit was originally meant to carry the James Bond license, and when that fell through designer George Gomez paired his gadget-loaded spy car with Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn theme instead. The result was pure spy-movie fantasy, and Sunsoft's 1987 NES version puts it right in your hands.

You are behind the wheel of the G-6155 Interceptor, racing down an endless highway with machine guns blazing while enemy agents try to ram you, run you off the road or bomb you from a helicopter overhead. Drive into the back of the Weapons Van and you can come away with oil slicks, smoke screens or missiles to deal with the pursuers. Be careful with that trigger, though: civilian cars share the road, and shooting them costs you. When the highway splits, a boathouse turns the car into a speedboat for a stretch of water combat, and push far enough and the seasons change around you, turning the asphalt into a slick winter test of nerve.

Spy Hunter was one of the most distinctive arcade games of its era, a vertical-scrolling blend of racing and shooting that later inspired sequels, a 2001 console reboot and even Sunsoft's own spiritual follow-up on the NES, Super Spy Hunter. This cartridge is the way to bring the original Interceptor home: quick to pick up, hard to put down, and still a thrill every time that van rolls into view.

About the game

The NES port of Spy Hunter, a driving action game played from an overhead point of view. Your car is equipped with machine guns to help you get past the numerous enemies out on the road (be careful not to shoot any civilians, though!) Occasionally you will come across a weapons van, and if you drive into the back of the van your car becomes equipped with a second weapon (such as smoke screen, oil slick, or missiles). At several points the road splits and you can enter a boathouse which transforms your car into a boat temporarily. If you drive far enough the seasons change as well (watch out for icy conditions during winter!). The enemy cars will do anything to stop you, including running you off the road, firing guns from the back of a limo, or dropping bombs from a helicopter.
