Item Description

A potato in a baseball cap is the unlikely hero of Spud's Adventure, one of Atlus's early Game Boy releases and a long way from the demons of Megami Tensei. King Vegitan the 5th is trying to find a husband for his daughter, the tomato Princess Mato, when Devi, a demonic beetle, storms the castle and carries her off. Two knights set out to rescue her and never come back, so Spud, a lonely wanderer, volunteers for the job.

His quest climbs Far Tower floor by floor. Spud fights with a projectile attack, earning experience as he goes and gaining a level, with more health, for every 100 points. Along the way he frees the missing knights, Arnie Eggplant and Gerrit Carrot, and later Terry Turnip, and you can switch between your rescued allies, each with abilities of their own. The floors keep changing the rules: mazes, puzzles, locked doors that need keys, rooms with holes in the floor, floors that reverse your controls and floors where the lights go out. Certain floors end in a boss fight that rewards a password, so the climb can be picked back up later.

There is a competitive side, too. With two copies of the game and a Game Link Cable, a Versus Mode lets two players choose a tower round and race each other to rescue the princess first.

Released in Japan as Totsugeki! Bareishons in 1991, Spud's Adventure got a lukewarm reception from Famitsu at launch, but its vegetable cast, puzzle-heavy floors and odd sense of humor have earned it a cult following among Game Boy fans. It is a charming curiosity from Atlus's early days, years before Persona made the company a household name for RPG players.
