Item Description

Hearing a real announcer call the action from a Genesis cartridge felt like magic in 1992, and that is the hook of Sports Talk Baseball. Sega built it on the Sports Talk speech technology that debuted in Joe Montana II: Sports Talk Football, and recorded its play calls with Lon Simmons, the longtime Bay Area baseball broadcaster. A line drive, a diving stop, a double play turned up the middle: the game tells you about it out loud.

Under the commentary sits a solid, fast-moving baseball game. You can play exhibitions, a full regular season, an All-Star game or the playoffs, and the all-star rosters can be edited to build a team from players in both leagues. The MLBPA license puts real players on the field with statistics from the 1991 season, which sets up classic duels like Nolan Ryan pitching to an Oakland lineup of Jose Canseco, Rickey Henderson and Mark McGwire. It was also one of the first games to give each pitcher his own hitting ability, so letting your ace bat actually means something.

The rules have a few Sega quirks. Double and triple plays turn up often, only the fastest runners can reliably steal, and a mercy rule ends the game once a team leads by ten runs. Hit one far enough and the outfield billboard flashes a black-and-white Sonic the Hedgehog. The game began life in Japan as Pro Yakyuu Super League '91, which played to a drum soundtrack instead of running commentary, so the talking booth is the signature of the North American release.

Its reputation has held up well, with several modern lists ranking it among the best baseball video games, and it captures the moment when sports games on the Genesis started competing on presentation as much as on gameplay. It is a lively, easy-to-learn pick for a Genesis sports shelf and a fun two-player game for anyone who grew up on early-'90s baseball.

About the game

Players can play either exhibition, regular season, all-star, or playoff games. The game also features authentic Major League Baseball rosters for the 1991 season. Gameplay commonly features double and triple plays, and only the fastest runners in the game are capable of stealing bases. It was one of the first video games to feature individual hitting abilities for each pitcher. Classic match-ups include Texas' Nolan Ryan versus Oakland's lineup with such all-stars as Jose Canseco, Rickey Henderson, Dave Henderson, and Mark McGwire.
