Item Description
SpongeBob has always been a superhero in his own head, and SpongeBob HeroPants takes that daydream and runs with it. Released by Activision in 2015 alongside the movie The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, it is a light action-platformer set inside SpongeBob's runaway imagination, where the residents of Bikini Bottom become caped champions.
Six characters are playable: SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs and even Plankton, and each can transform into a superpowered version of themselves to solve problems the regular crew cannot. Everyone carries a Burger Blaster for long-range shots, and a meter that fills over time triggers Superhero Mode, swapping the blaster for a special attack until the power runs out. The adventure is about recovering the missing pages of a magic book, with boss battles, upgradeable skills and hidden items tucked around each area, and finding every page leads to a different ending than settling for some of them.
Developed by Behaviour Interactive's Santiago studio, it was aimed squarely at younger players, and critics were not kind to it outside the SpongeBob faithful. Taken on those terms, it is a short, cheerful, easy-going adventure with the show's bright look and a full cast of favorites. On the Vita it is also a curiosity: a late, kid-focused licensed release from the handheld's final years, and a fun pickup for a young SpongeBob fan or a collector filling out the system's more offbeat corners.
