The villain in Pandora Tomorrow cannot simply be taken out, and that single idea gives the whole campaign its knife-edge tension. Suhadi Sadono, leader of the Indonesian militia Darah Dan Doa, has smallpox weapons hidden on American soil and a dead man’s switch to protect himself: if he stops checking in, the bombs are released. So Sam Fisher has to do what he does best, slipping through the dark, following the trail and finding the threat before anyone pulls a trigger.
The story opens in the spring of 2006, with the United States training the military of newly independent East Timor and Sadono’s guerrillas storming the American embassy in Dili. From there Fisher works through a sequence of tense, varied missions that take him well beyond Southeast Asia, including a run along the roof and through the carriages of a moving passenger train, and each one asks you to read the space, plan a route and keep your hands clean for as long as you can.
The core of Splinter Cell is intact: light is your enemy, a meter tells you how visible you are, and noise draws guards as surely as a flashlight beam. Night vision and thermal vision turn pitch-black rooms into your playground, and Fisher’s acrobatics still define the series, from the split jump that wedges him high between two walls to hanging from pipes above a patrol. Pandora Tomorrow adds new tricks of its own, such as the SWAT turn for slipping past open doorways unseen and a whistle for luring a guard into the shadows where you are waiting. Michael Ironside’s dry, gravelly Fisher is back, and Lalo Schifrin, the composer behind the Mission: Impossible theme, scored the game.
Ubisoft Shanghai led the single-player campaign, and the GameCube version gives Nintendo players the full Sadono story on a console that had very few serious stealth games to its name. It is the entry where the series sharpened its formula before the bigger swings of Chaos Theory, and a great way to experience Sam Fisher’s early, patient, nerve-racking style of espionage on Nintendo hardware.
Pandora Tomorrow takes place in Indonesia during the spring of 2006, in which the United States has established a military presence in the newly independent country of East Timor to train that country's military forces in their fight against anti-separatist Indonesian guerrilla militias. Foremost among these Indonesian militias is the Darah Dan Doa (Blood and Prayer), led by Suhadi Sadono.
