Item Description
Ask longtime Splinter Cell fans to name the series at its sharpest and most will land on Chaos Theory. Sam Fisher's third mission is where Ubisoft Montreal's stealth design came together: big, layered levels with multiple routes and optional objectives, plus a toolkit flexible enough that two players can clear the same map in completely different ways.
Darkness is still the best weapon you have. Shooting out lights, keeping an eye on the sound meter, timing your movement to guard patrols and melting into shadow gives the game its tense rhythm, and the OCP attachment on Sam's pistol can briefly knock out lights and cameras so you never leave a broken bulb behind as evidence. Chaos Theory added the combat knife, which opens up interrogations and quick close-quarters takedowns, and the inverted neck break from an overhead pipe is a fan favorite. End-of-mission ratings reward a clean, undetected run, but the game never punishes you for improvising when a plan falls apart and you have to go loud with the prototype rifle.
The story drops Sam into a near-future information-warfare crisis that pulls Japan, North Korea and China toward open conflict, and the locations are some of the series' most memorable: a rain-lashed lighthouse in Peru, a New York penthouse, a Japanese bathhouse, a North Korean missile battery and the streets of Seoul. Michael Ironside's gravelly Fisher is as dry as ever, and Amon Tobin's moody electronic score gives every infiltration a distinct atmosphere.
The GameCube version keeps the cooperative infiltration missions, played split-screen, where two agents boost each other over walls and work together through areas no single operative could manage. If Sam Fisher's best outing slipped past you the first time, this disc is a superb way to play it on Nintendo hardware.
