Item Description

A lighthouse on the coast of Peru, a guard on patrol and Sam Fisher hanging from a pipe just above his head: Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory opens with the kind of tension this series does better than anyone, and it rarely lets up from there. Ubisoft Montreal's third Sam Fisher adventure is widely considered the high point of the franchise, a stealth game that refined everything the first two did and gave players far more freedom in how to approach each mission.

The core is still light, shadow and sound, with new layers on top. A sound meter measures your noise against the ambient noise around you, so footsteps that go unnoticed beside a humming generator can give you away in a quiet hallway. Sam's new combat knife makes close encounters faster and more decisive, the SC-20K rifle takes a range of attachments, and levels are built with multiple routes and optional objectives that reward exploration, from the lighthouse to a famous bank job in Panama. You can ghost through a mission without a trace or take a more aggressive approach. Michael Ironside's gravelly, sardonic Fisher has rarely been better, and the plot, which spirals from stolen algorithms into a crisis involving Japan, China and the Koreas, gives every mission global stakes.

Multiplayer is where Chaos Theory went further than its rivals. A separate two-player cooperative campaign sends a pair of agents through missions designed around teamwork, with moves that only work when partners help each other reach, climb and slip past danger. The asymmetric Spies vs. Mercenaries mode pits nimble third-person spies against heavily armed first-person mercs, a design that felt like nothing else on Xbox Live in its heyday. The co-op campaign in particular is a big reason players still talk about this game with such affection.

Amon Tobin's moody, skittering electronic score gives the whole thing a distinctive nocturnal pulse, and the writing finds room for dry humor between the tense stretches. If you only play one Splinter Cell, this is the entry most fans will point you to, and the Xbox is where Sam Fisher's adventures made their name.

To achieve your mission you will kill from close range, attack with your combat knife, shoot with the prototype Land Warrior rifle, and use radical suppression techniques such as the inverted neck break.
