Item Description
Nobody expected Nintendo's answer to the online shooter to be a game about squids, paint and street fashion, and that surprise is exactly why Splatoon felt so fresh in 2015. Built from scratch as a brand-new franchise, it swaps bullets for ink and eliminations for coverage. Inklings flip between kid form, for running and firing, and squid form, for swimming through their own color at speed, slipping through grates, climbing inked walls and refilling their tank while hiding in plain sight. The ground itself is the scoreboard, and that one idea turns every match into a frantic, colorful tug-of-war.
Turf War gives two teams of four three minutes to paint more of the map than the other side, and the simple rule hides real depth: when to push, when to fall back and touch up your own base, and when to use the GamePad map to Super Jump straight to a teammate. Ranked Battle added Splat Zones and Tower Control, with Rainmaker arriving in a free update. The weapons split neatly by playstyle, from the all-round Splattershot to the paint-flattening Splat Roller and the long-range Splat Charger, each paired with a sub weapon and a special such as the Kraken or the Inkzooka, and the motion-aim on the GamePad makes flicking shots across a map feel quick and natural.
Hero Mode is far more than a tutorial. Recruited by the gruff veteran Cap'n Cuttlefish, you head into Octo Valley to rescue the stolen Great Zapfish from DJ Octavio and his Octarian army, hunting Sunken Scrolls along the way. The stages play like inventive 3D platforming courses built around ink, with sponge blocks that swell when painted, platforms you bring to life by inking them, and boss fights that test your movement as much as your aim. The final battle, set to a live performance by the Squid Sisters, Callie and Marie, is the moment many players remember best.
Splatoon grew into one of Nintendo's biggest modern series, and this is where Inkopolis, Sheldon's weapon shop and the whole Inkling look began. Nintendo has since closed the Wii U's online service, so today the disc is about Hero Mode and the local Battle Dojo, a two-player balloon-popping duel with one player on the GamePad and the other on the TV. As the first chapter of a franchise that reshaped how Nintendo thinks about multiplayer, it is a fascinating, playable piece of the series' history on the hardware it was designed for.

About the game
Splatoon is primarily a team-based third-person shooter which is playable by up to eight players in 4-vs-4 matches, although the game also features a single-player campaign. Players control characters called Inklings, wich can change between human form and squid form. Transforming into a squid allows players to swim through ink of their own color, even up walls and through grates, hiding from the enemy and replenishing their ink supply in the process.
