Item Description

In the summer of the first Sam Raimi film, this was the game that let you put on the suit. Treyarch’s Spider-Man follows Peter Parker from the wrestling ring and his first costume through to his showdown with the Green Goblin, and it brought real star power with it: Tobey Maguire voices Spider-Man and Willem Dafoe returns as Norman Osborn’s cackling alter ego. Bruce Campbell, a Raimi regular, narrates the tutorial and bonus levels with exactly the smirk you would hope for.

The game expands the movie’s story with a gallery of extra villains drawn from the comics. Shocker and Vulture team up for a jewelry store robbery early on, Scorpion turns up after Oscorp’s spider-hunting robots mistake him for the wall-crawler, and the Goblin keeps returning with his glider and pumpkin bombs. Levels alternate between brawling through enclosed areas, where fists, kicks and web attacks combine into combos, and aerial sequences high above New York City where you swing between rooftops to chase down a target or save someone from danger.

Swinging was the big draw in 2002, and it still has a pleasing sense of altitude, even if the web lines shoot up into the sky rather than sticking to buildings the way they would in the sequel. Clearing the story on harder settings unlocks extras that kept fans playing past the credits, including the chance to fly as a Goblin armed with glider, pumpkin bombs and razor bats, an alternate take on the story told through Harry Osborn, and costumes such as Peter Parker’s street clothes and the wrestler outfit.

Critics liked the presentation, the combat and the web mechanics, while grumbling about the camera and the short campaign, and players turned it into a bestseller that earned a Player’s Choice reissue on the GameCube. It is the game that set up Treyarch’s famous Spider-Man 2, and a fun, very early-2000s snapshot of the Raimi era, with Dafoe’s Goblin hamming it up in every cutscene.
