Spider-Man has spent decades trading punches with Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin and Venom, so there is a real kick in watching them swing in as his backup. Spider-Man: Friend or Foe builds its whole premise on that twist. Mysterio has brainwashed Spidey's rogues gallery and unleashed the P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s, creatures made from symbiote matter and holographic technology, to gather meteor shards that will power his bid to take over the world. S.H.I.E.L.D. recruits Spider-Man to stop him, and the villains he beats in boss battles can be turned into allies.

From the Helicarrier hub, the adventure hops between locations around the globe, including Tokyo, Egypt and Nepal, and the brawling is simple, fast and built for two. A second player can take control of Spidey's sidekick, and a solo player can swap between Spider-Man and the partner at any point in a level. The roster of recruits is the real draw on the Xbox 360: heroes such as Black Cat, Blade, Iron Fist and Prowler fight alongside freed villains like Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Lizard and Venom, and Silver Sable joins the lineup on the Microsoft versions. New Goblin unlocks once the story is finished, and clearing secret rooms unlocks them for a two-player versus mode.

The tone is much lighter than the films it borrows from. Characters are drawn in a chunky, big-headed style, the dialogue leans into jokes, and the levels reinterpret big-screen moments from the Sam Raimi trilogy with a humorous twist. Critics at the time found it easy and repetitive, and that is a fair read, but it also makes this an unusually welcoming Spider-Man game: a younger player or a sibling can pick up the second controller and contribute right away without memorizing combos.

It is also a snapshot of 2007, the year Spider-Man 3 hit theaters and Spidey was everywhere. Friend or Foe, like most of Activision's Marvel-licensed games, was pulled from digital storefronts at the start of 2014, so a disc is the way to round up this unlikely team of heroes and reformed villains on an Xbox 360 for a night of couch co-op.
