Item Description

Things look grim for Peter Parker almost from the first scene of Spider-Man: Edge of Time, and the only person in a position to help him is nearly a century away. In the year 2099, Miguel O'Hara watches history start to shift after Walker Sloan, a ruthless schemer voiced by Val Kilmer, slips back in time to establish Alchemax years before its founding and remake the future to suit himself. The result is a superhero story told across two eras at once, with the classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 racing to repair a timeline that keeps breaking in new ways.

The hook is cause and effect. Sloan's time gateway binds the two periods together, so one Spider-Man's actions can change the world the other is fighting through, and the campaign alternates between them as the consequences pile up. Each hero brings his own trick to the action: Peter can trigger a hyper-sense mode to move at blinding speed, taking down enemies or slipping past laser defenses unharmed, while Miguel can project a decoy of himself to draw attention or get around security. Along the way the pair tangle with Anti-Venom, clones of Black Cat voiced by Katee Sackhoff, and eventually Atrocity, a monstrous fusion of Sloan, Anti-Venom and Alchemax's Doctor Octavius.

Beenox built Edge of Time as the follow-up to Shattered Dimensions, trading that game's four-hero lineup for a tighter two-man story, and the script is where it shines. The story comes from Peter David, the writer who co-created Spider-Man 2099 in the comics, and the voice cast is stacked: Josh Keaton plays Peter, while Christopher Daniel Barnes, the voice of Spider-Man in the 1994 animated series, takes on Miguel. Critics singled out the writing and performances even as they found the action more repetitive than its predecessor, so this is a game to play for its banter, its time-twisting plot and its unusually personal take on the 2099 character.

It also captures a particular moment for Miguel O'Hara. Years before the Spider-Verse films made him a household name, Edge of Time gave him equal billing with Peter Parker in a full console adventure built around the Alchemax-ruled future of 2099. Most of Activision's Marvel-licensed games were pulled from digital storefronts years ago, so a disc is the straightforward way to put this ambitious, time-bending chapter of Spider-Man's gaming history back on an Xbox 360.

About the game

Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a follow-up to Shattered Dimensions, and similarly it has more than one Spider-Man takes a starring role. Here, it is the regular, classic "Amazing" Spider-Man, and Spider-Man 2099 – in a story awash in time travel, temporal battles, and Anti-Venom. The backbone of this story seems to play out more like a Spider-Man 2099 story, since he is the only character truly aware of the happenings in the game, and the changes that both Spider-Men encounter. From the opening, things are bleak for Amazing Spider-Man who begins the game nearly dead, and 2099 is the only one who can help. A new villain Walker Sloan enters the picture with a plan to rebuild the past (from the year 2099) in his image and design, which turns to affect both Spider-Men. From this point, chaos unfolds in typical comic-book fashion with gameplay evenly split between Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099, with every other level interwoven with the events of one Spidey to the other.
