Item Description

Web-swinging is the heart of any great Spider-Man game, and Spider-Man 3 gives you more Manhattan to swing through than any Spider-Man game before it. Based on Sam Raimi's 2007 film, the Xbox 360 version opens up the city's skyline, its streets and more than 20 miles of subway tunnels, and turns Peter Parker loose to fight crime between story missions that can be tackled in a flexible, non-linear order.

The film's plot is only the spine. Alongside the clashes with Sandman, the New Goblin and Venom, the game spins out arcs the movie never had room for: the Lizard and his infected sewer creatures, Kraven the Hunter, Scorpion, the Kingpin and rival street gangs such as the Dragon Tails. Tobey Maguire, James Franco, Topher Grace, Thomas Haden Church and J.K. Simmons voice their film roles, and Bruce Campbell is back as the wisecracking narrator, a running gag that fans of the Raimi films will appreciate.

The symbiote is the big hook. Once Peter bonds with the black suit, he can tap into a rage mode for heavier, more brutal attacks, and collecting all 50 Black Spider Tokens hidden around the city unlocks the suit for permanent use. The combat system was rebuilt with more attacks than the older-console versions, quick-time events punctuate the big cinematic moments, and side activities keep the sandbox busy between missions: trick races, combat tours, bomb tours and random street crimes. Finishing the story also opens a Symbiote Spider-Man story mode and an Arena mode.

Critics found it uneven, with camera trouble and boss fights drawing complaints, but the swinging earned praise and it is still the reason to play. Spider-Man 3 was the final game tied to Raimi's trilogy, and it captures that era's look, voices and tone in a way nothing since has tried to. For anyone with a soft spot for Maguire's Spider-Man, it is a nostalgic trip back to his New York, on the console that gave it the most room to breathe.
