Bruce Campbell guides you through the tutorial, Tobey Maguire voices Peter Parker and Willem Dafoe cackles as the Green Goblin: Treyarch's Spider-Man was the official game of Sam Raimi's 2002 film, and it brought much of the movie's cast along for the ride. It follows Peter from his early days in the suit through the Goblin's escalating attacks on New York, with a run of extra comic-book villains folded in along the way.
The heart of the game is simply being Spider-Man. You swing between skyscrapers high above the streets, zip up to rooftops, crawl across walls and ceilings, and string together punches, kicks and web attacks in combat. Collecting Gold Spiders unlocks new combos, 21 in all, and each of your web abilities can be upgraded, so Spidey's fighting style grows as the game goes on. Some missions slow things down with stealth sections, where hiding in the shadows is smarter than throwing a punch.
The villain lineup reaches well beyond the movie. Alongside the Green Goblin, Spider-Man battles the Shocker, the Vulture and the Scorpion, and the Xbox version adds an exclusive storyline in which Norman Osborn hires Kraven the Hunter to capture the wall-crawler. Kraven lures him to a zoo, poisons him and forces him through a trap-filled obstacle course in search of the antidote, giving Xbox players a showdown that the other console versions never got.
Critics praised the presentation and the satisfying combat at release, and while it is a brisk adventure you can finish in an evening or two, that is part of its charm. It plays like a summer-blockbuster tie-in that actually understood its hero. It also laid the groundwork Treyarch built on for Spider-Man 2's celebrated open-city swinging, which makes this first movie outing a fun look at where that leap began.
