Item Condition

Complete in box: the cartridge, the manual and the box, all original; anything beyond that is included only if you can see it in the photos. Look over the photos for condition, packaging and details. Every cartridge's shell, label and board are checked for authenticity when it comes into the store, and it's tested before it's listed. It ships in a collector's bag or a hard plastic case.

Item Description

For a lot of players, this was the game that finally got Spider-Man right. Neversoft, the studio behind Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, built it on that game's engine for Activision in 2000, and its story feels like a lost comic arc. Doctor Octopus has apparently gone straight, an impostor in Spider-Man's costume crashes his press conference, and Peter Parker has to clear his own name while a strange fog creeps over the city.

What makes it work is how many ways it lets you be Spider-Man. You crawl along walls and ceilings, swing between rooftops, zip across gaps on a strand of webbing and leave thugs wrapped up for the police. The web tricks go well beyond swinging: web gloves add punch to your fists, impact webbing hits from range and a web dome surrounds you in a burst of silk. Levels mix rooftop chases, indoor brawls and boss fights against a rogues gallery that includes Scorpion, Rhino, Mysterio, the Lizard, Venom, Carnage and Doctor Octopus, with Black Cat, Daredevil, the Punisher, Captain America and the Human Torch turning up along the way.

Comic books hidden throughout the levels unlock a gallery, and a closet of alternate costumes rewards repeat play. The Nintendo 64 version, ported by Edge of Reality, makes some cartridge-sized trade-offs: cutscenes appear as still frames rather than full-motion video, the voice work is pared back, and the PlayStation's bonus What If? mode is gone. The levels, villains and web-slinging all made the trip, and N64 Magazine scored it 78%.

The game was popular enough to earn a direct sequel, Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, but that one stayed on the PlayStation. That leaves this cartridge as the only place Peter Parker swings on the Nintendo 64, and a fun reminder of the moment when a skateboarding studio figured out how a superhero should move in 3D.
