Item Description

Long before open-world web-slinging, Spider-Man's first video game asked one thing of him: get to the top of the building before the Green Goblin's bomb goes off. Released by Parker Brothers in 1982 and programmed by Laura Nikolich, it was the first game to star Spider-Man and the first video game based on any Marvel Comics character, which gives this Atari 2600 cartridge a special place in both Marvel and gaming history.

Spider-Man climbs by swinging on web lines, shooting them straight up or at a diagonal, and the climb is full of hazards. Criminals pop up in the windows; touch one and you capture him, but if one reaches your web line he cuts it, and you have to fire a new one fast or fall. A web fluid meter at the bottom of the screen drains as you go, refilled a little by every criminal caught and every bomb defused, so you can't dawdle. Near the top, the building gives way to girders studded with small bombs that turn from black to red before they blow, with red bombs worth more points if you dare to wait.

At the summit waits the Green Goblin and his super bomb. Once its fuse is lit you have limited time to reach it while avoiding the Goblin himself, and defusing it sends you on to the next level, where buildings grow taller and the Goblins get faster and more numerous.

Electronic Fun with Computers and Games called it a "nice variation on the theme" of Crazy Climber, and that is a fair description: a vertical action game with a hero who suits the idea perfectly. For Spider-Man fans and Marvel collectors, this is where the character's long video game career began.
